As an enduring fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, I, like many others, have suffered the disheartening effects of financial disparity in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Pirates' unprecedented 32-year postseason drought ranks ninth on the all-time list. More discouragingly, Pittsburgh tops the charts when it comes to League Championship Series droughts.
In recent years, the Pirates’ struggles can be attributed to financial limitations (the greedy owner). Without a mandated salary cap and floor in MLB, wealthy teams can exploit their resources to attract the best players, creating a sense of imbalance and unfair competition. Comparable sports like NFL, NBA, and NHL all have salary caps and floors put in place to maintain fair competition.
By personally boycotting funds to the Pirates, I am not acting out of anger towards the team we love, but rather towards the MLB who has failed to install these necessary regulations. However, our lone voices might not be enough. It is time that we fans unite and demand MLB to establish a salary cap and floor. This ensures not only a fairer field of competition but also a more exciting and unpredictable game, for the benefit of all MLB teams and their fans.
